Antique Wood Carving BLAWONG
Antique Carving
This antique teak carving from Java appears to be a blawong, a traditional panel used to hold and display keris daggers. It retains its fastening cords and features a wayang-inspired figure alongside animal motifs carved in relief.
Its elongated silhouette and arched top frame richly toned wood with pronounced grain. Small cracks, wear and a beautiful patina lend the surface a distinctive visual depth.
A piece with history and an artistic presence that brings character to any setting.
The keris is a traditional dagger with deep significance in Javanese culture, associated with its owner’s identity and family heritage. Blawong panels were used to display it in the home, combining a practical purpose with the artistry of their carvings.
Here, the figure’s stylised profile, headdress and clothing evoke the world of wayang, Java’s traditional theatre. Animal motifs complete a composition whose precise character and meaning remain unconfirmed.
The teak retains a pronounced texture and tonal variations that highlight the relief carving. Particularly elegant in an entrance hall, above a sideboard or as a focal point on a wall, its antique character creates a subtle contrast.
To clean, use a soft brush or a dry cloth. Avoid water and abrasive products.
